Out of Home (OOH) Media Advantages
August 31, 2009
Accessibility
One thing that OOH media has to its credit big time would be the accessibility issue. A large portion of the advertising that the average consumer is subjected to these days is advertising that comes at them when they are in their home. Internet advertising, television advertising, newspaper advertising and magazine advertising are all examples of this. Because OOH is not associated with these, it is definitely a type of medium that can be used with great accessibility advantages.
Association
Another advantage of OOH media is the fact that it is associated with something that consumers are doing when they are out of their home. Unless the consumer in question is someone that is ultra-technological, they will still do a reasonable share of their shopping out of the house. This means that they are seeing your OOH advertisement when they are out already shopping for something. The buying mood is one that they are already in. Therefore, the association with buying in your OOH ad and their buying mood can potentially be advantageous for you if the linkage comes around at the right time.
Status
Companies that do OOH advertising are generally companies that are associated with a lot of status. Think about the companies that advertise at bus stops or on large billboards. These are companies that are usually very large and knowable, partially because of the fact that they have done OOH advertising on a large scale. Status is something that can on its own create sales momentum for your company and it does sometimes come with OOH advertising.
Branding
OOH advertising gives you a unique chance for branding in a way that no other form of advertising can. Take the specific case of OOH advertising on a billboard. What kind of brand recognition could you promote that would be anywhere near as effective as getting your brand blown up to thousands of percentage points on that gigantic billboard? The answer is a very obvious nothing. Nothing else can match that when it comes to branding, making this another OOH media advantage.
Impression Efficiency
Compare billboard advertising to advertising on the television or the radio. Sure the billboard advertisement is more expensive. Sure the radio will give you a better going rate and so will the television. But when you are advertising OOH, the whole city can potentially see your advertisement. This is unlikely to happen when you are dealing with other forms of in house advertising. That is certainly something worth keeping in mind beyond the issue of absolute cost for both of these advertising types.
Final Thoughts
These are by no means the only advantages that you’d get through OOH advertising, but they are certainly a list good enough to illustrate the point. A lot of people would claim that the internet has killed OOH advertising, but nothing could be further from the truth. The internet will never kill OOH advertising for the simple reason that it can never be out of home in the real sense of the phrase.
Digital out of home media allows you to tell a compelling story as your consumer travels throughout their day. Adding a mobile marketing component to your digital out of home advertising is a great way for consumers to interact with your campaign message.
Retail Software, An Easy Solution For Small Business
August 31, 2009
For retailers, the need for a reliable method of managing their small business is an essential element to businesses success. Technological advancements have now made running a business much less difficult. These advancements in technology have resulted in the creation of retail software that makes small business management much easier and more efficient.
Retail software can include applications for point-of-sale system software applications for the management of inventory, revenue, finances, customer personal details, staffing, special promotional programs, and more. As well, this type of software allows a business to spend less time on paperwork, accounting, inventory management, sales record keeping, as well as managing such programs as marketing, special advertising programs, loyalty programs, discount programs, and much more. The type of retail software a small business chooses depends on the type of business, size of the business, amount of sales, and the type and amount of inventory.
Retail software contains the following important features:
- Retail software is easy to learn and operate. Most retail software companies will train management and staff on how to use the software, It is also easy to install and maintain, with technical support only a phone call away.
- There is retail software that provides effective inventory management. Businesses will be able to see what items are selling, what items are not selling, and what items need to be reordered. The software will also alert you when you need to reorder a product. Businesses can also keep track of the time of day that certain products are selling and when there is a high volume of customers. This will allow a business to better manage product displays and staffing.
- There is retail software that can be integrated into other software applications. This allows the user to effectively manage a broad range of applications thereby having management of the business in one central location.
- Retail software allows a small business to effectively track sales, provide sales reports, and allows for easy analysis of sales so as to better improve businesses sales management. It can even provide real-time sales and inventory reporting. The software allows for customization of programs such as rewards programs, discounts, special promotions…etc.
- Retail software makes it much easier to maintain vendor information, customer billing and shipping, customer personal information, as well as staff payment and management data.
The traditional days of using a cash register and pen and paper for accounting and inventory are no longer suitable for keeping up with today’s highly competitive business world. The selection of the right type of retail software depends on one’s businesses needs. When choosing retail software it is important to compare prices and features to make sure you choose the right software that meets your business requirements.
The benefits of retail software make it an important and necessary small business investment. Retail software will help increase business efficiency by eliminating time consuming operational tasks. Retail software systems helps businesses increase sales, track customer purchases, track sales and inventory, and improve overall management of the small business. This gives the business owner complete control of operations and greater flexibility when making important management decisions.
Point of sale software acts as an online cash register - storing your transactions securely online, an electronic cash register. Retail software also processes transactions electronically - all while managing your business.
Rewarding Your Customers With Loyalty Programs
August 31, 2009
Introduction
Everyone has some idea of how a loyalty program for their business might work. Chances are very good that if you’re reading this article, you’ve already thought about the logistics behind a loyalty program. Most people that have businesses hesitate to think about instituting a loyalty program for the simple reason that they are afraid of what it might do to their bottom line. This is not really the way to think in regards to a loyalty program though because you are giving up a little now to get a lot back later. Below are some other reasons that you should definitely consider instituting a loyalty program in your business.
Everyone Else is Doing It
If there is one reason that could be pointed to as being the single most convincing reason that anyone should ever need for rewarding their customers with a loyalty program, it should be the fact that everyone else is doing it too. When you are dealing with competition between businesses, someone offering a loyalty program is going to have a huge advantage in the marketplace over someone else that is not offering it to their customers.
For this reason, you need to offer a loyalty program to your customers in order to remain competitive. Even if you look around the industry right now and see that none of your main competitors have a loyalty program going, wouldn’t you rather be the one that initiates rather than the one that has to react? Throw your competition off by putting a loyalty program into place and you’ll find that you are most definitely ready to go forth and crush some of your immediate opposition.
Building Brand Image
Another good reason to create a loyalty program for your customers is to build up the brand image that you have. Whenever people talk about Subway or another one of those restaurants, what they usually talk about is the fact that they can get the 10th sub free after they have purchased the first nine. This is nothing more than a loyalty program. It is a loyalty program that loses them some money, but also gains them even more because of the brand image that they get in the end.
Increase Sales
What you need to realize regarding loyalty programs is that while they do decrease your earnings in the short term, they will increase them in the long term. When a loyalty program is put into place, you will find that the number of units sold of whatever business item you are offering will go up. This is something that is pretty much universally true about loyalty programs. The sales will increase as the loyalty program gets instituted. For this reason, many of the companies that put loyalty programs into place actually do end up finding in the end that their customers are rewarding them by spending more money on their items. If you want to get more sales and break into that next level, a loyalty program might very well be the vehicle to get you there.
Reward customer loyalty through one shared currency, simply for doing their everyday shopping, both physical and online. A reward program can expose your company to a new source of customers.
Points to Consider When Applying For Temporary Jobs
August 31, 2009
The current down turn in the economy has resulted in massive layoffs across the country. Many people are now looking to seek employment in a company as a temporary employee. If you are currently unemployed, a temporary job may be the solution to meeting financial obligations as well as giving you a competitive edge to finding full-time permanent employment.
When applying for a temporary job, it is important to consider the following points:
- The length of a temporary job can be as little as a week or up to several months. If you are currently employed, you may want to consider the length of a temporary job before you accept employment. If you are currently unemployed, taking a temporary job, no matter what the length, will be of great financial benefit as well as ensuring that there are not any gaps in your resume.
- If you have had a difficult time with a past employer, a temporary job may be just the solution for you. Because an employer knows the job is temporary, there tends to be a more of a friendly and amiable working relationship.
- It can often be difficult finding a temporary job on your own. There are temporary job agencies whose purpose is to match employers with temporary staff. These agencies have the contacts and job postings available. They even provide skill training programs. You should consider checking to see if there is a temporary employment agency in your area.
- With temporary employment, one will not usually have the added benefit of health insurance, vacation pay, sick pay…etc. You may want to consider acquiring your own private health care plan. If you sign up with a temporary employment agency, ask their advice about acquiring health insurance.
- Temporary jobs can provide you with a variety of new skills while keeping you out of the unemployment arena. You will acquire a vast range of skills and work experiences which potential full-time employers will find impressive.
- When seeking temporary employment, make sure that you are flexible and open-minded. Although it may seem like you getting a pay cut compared to a previous job, you have to remember that there are many people out there in your situation. Look at the positive side of the situation. You are working and bringing in income while searching for a full-time permanent job.
- Focus on the company you will be working for temporarily. Learn as much as you can and acquire new skills where possible. Show the company that although you may be a temporary employee, you are a valuable asset who is willing to work hard and learn. You may make a great impression which could possibly result in a full-time employment offer.
When employment circumstances are grim, temporary work can bring much needed stress and financial relief. Temporary work lets employers know that you are employable, a hard worker, and willing to take on new tasks. In many companies, it is often easier to get hired internally rather than applying from the outside. With a positive attitude and keeping your resume up-to-date, it may not be long before you find yourself with a permanent full-time job.
HR audits can help you uncover our most valuable assets and likely your biggest expense. Maximize your new employees’ performance with robust human resources consulting and orientation programs.
Is Online Shopping Better Than Actually Going to the Malls?
August 31, 2009
In the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in online shopping. Despite difficult economic times, online shopping is thriving. There are a number of reasons why online shopping has become more popular than going to traditional ‘brick and mortar’ shopping malls.
Below are a number of reasons why online shopping is better than actually going to the malls:
1. Going to a traditional shopping mall requires getting ready, getting the proper clothing, doing your hair and make up, making sure you have your money, and getting in your vehicle and driving there. When you shop online, you just switch on the computer, connect to the internet, and start shopping. It is easy, convenient, and it does not matter what are wearing and what you look like.
2. Transportation can be a hassle when you shop at a traditional mall. You have to spend money on fuel, fight the traffic, locate a parking spot, and carry all your purchased items to the car. With online shopping, you don’t have to worry about transportation hassles and often your packages are delivered right to the door. If you don’t have a car, taking a bus can be a real hassle when going to a mall.
3. Shopping malls are well-known for the crowds. It can be frustrating trying to get the items you want to purchase. With online shopping, there are no pushy crowds and you can relax and enjoy your online shopping experience.
4. Shopping online is better for the environment. Most online retailers keep their items at a central distribution centre so there is less energy being used which is better for the planet. Retail stores have such energy consuming things as lights and heating and cooling units. As well, shipping from online stores is better on the environment. According to the Center for Energy and Climate Solutions, “shipping two 20 pound packages by overnight air - the most energy-intensive delivery mode - still uses 40 percent less fuel than driving 20 miles round-trip to the mall or store.”
5. Online shopping is a definite time saver. Most people shop on the weekends. Many shopping experiences at a traditional mall can take an entire day. Online shopping saves time so you can enjoy the rest of your weekend. Or, you may have the weekend free if you online shop during the weekday. You can shop any time of the day or night.
6. You can save a lot of money when you online shop. There are many deals on the internet just waiting to be scooped up. As well, most online shops offer free shipping on a certain amount purchased. You are also paying a cheaper price because online stores have less overhead.
7. Shopping online gives access to millions of different products. When you go to a shopping at a shopping mall, you only have access to what the stores have in stock so you end up going from store to store trying to find what you are looking for. Sometimes, it is not always available. When shopping online, you almost always find what you are looking for. You can also comparison shop to find the deals.
Online shopping is continuing to grow at astounding rates. With improvements in secure payment processing, the online shopping industry shows no signs of slowing down. More consumers are discovering that it is a great way to find exactly what you are looking for at a low price.
Online shopping for computers and gadgets? Why not earn points as you’re shopping for dell computers online!

Integration of Six Sigma and the Design of Experiments Process
August 31, 2009
The Six Sigma methodology has been implemented in nearly every imaginable industry. It has generated stunning results for companies in the service, hospitality, and banking industries as well as the manufacturing industry. By isolating existing business processes, companies can use the strategy to identify areas in which inefficiencies exist. The results include lower costs to bring a product to the end customer, higher quality, and improved customer satisfaction. However, the methodology has inherent limitations.
If a business process includes only a few inputs, it is relatively simple for a Six Sigma team to analyze for improvement. On the other hand, if a stream contains 100, 20, or even 10 inputs, it is far more complex to review using a traditional approach. The Design of Experiments (DoE) system was developed to help address this issue.
In this article, I’ll explain the traditional Six Sigma approach as it is currently deployed throughout organizations in every industry. Then, I’ll describe Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) and explain how it relates to the original methodology. Lastly, we’ll explore the factors and responses that DoE was created to address.
The Traditional Approach
As we’ve covered in past articles, the original system follows a DMAIC (Design, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) system of steps. Each step has been categorized according to its goals. The Design step is dedicated to identifying an organization’s objectives and deliverables as they relate to the end customer (who might be within or outside the company).
The Measure step is devoted to understanding the current performance levels of the business process under review. It involves determining the key metrics and gathering data regarding the outputs of the process. It is during this step that performance benchmarks are established. The Improve step involves the use of statistical analysis to further understand the influence of key inputs on the performance benchmarks.
The next two steps (Improve and Control) are focused on isolating problem areas that are generating defects or inefficiencies, creating solutions, and implementing those solutions. Once they have been implemented, the Green Belts and Black Belts monitor their impact, and design a plan for handing off the monitoring responsibilities to others.
What Is DFSS?
DFSS stands for Design For Six Sigma. Though the methodology is related to the original DMAIC approach, there are important differences. While Six Sigma and DMAIC involve the analysis and improvement of existing processes, DFSS emphasizes the creation of an entirely new process. One of the specialized tools that DFSS relies upon is DoE. In a way, DFSS is an amalgamation of DMAIC and DoE.
While the last two steps of DMAIC are devoted to improving and controlling process outputs, DFSS uses two alternate steps: Design and Verify. Both focus on optimizing and measuring the experimental runs that will eventually become business processes.
Factors And Responses Of DoE
We have arrived at factors and responses (in the context of DoE) through the back door. You already know that DMAIC identifies key inputs that impact quality. You also know that the methodology monitors outputs in order to measure the success of the implemented solutions. Factors and responses are simply inputs and outputs. However, they involve a bit more complexity than the inputs and outputs used in a traditional Six Sigma deployment.
The factors are analyzed through factorial experiments. While DMAIC is designed to isolate and study one variable at a time, factorial experiments are conducted to measure the results of multiple inputs simultaneously. In the process, DoE can monitor multiple responses that result from the inputs. This is necessary in order to create an entirely new business process. Otherwise, doing so would take far too much time.
Six Sigma and Design of Experiments (and in some cases, other DFSS tools) should be integrated when multiple variables need to be analyzed at the same time. It is a relatively new combination of methodologies. But, it will likely grow in popularity as business processes become more complex.

Is Your Construction Software Helping to Make You More Profitable?
August 31, 2009
Those in the industry know that the construction industry is highly competitive. Profit margins are tight and everything that your company does needs to contribute to profitability if you really want to get ahead and stay there. This means that even the most basic service call needs to somehow make you some profit. Business tools are no exception here, either - they need to contribute to profitability or else they need to be replaced. The purpose of this article is to help you see if your current software is contributing to your profits or if it is another overhead expense that should be minimized.
Job Cost
Simply put, the more accurate the information you use for job costing, the more profitable your jobs will be.
Things to check for in your current system or in new systems:
- job cost projections can easily be produced on a regular basis
- Your software warns you (as early as possible) when jobs go off-track in terms of cost
- the software provides you real-time access to the actual costs for a given project or job
Project Management
Software that allows you to automate your project management is always ideal as it requires less time and saves money. However, it will ultimately come down to how well your software can track details (or how well you use the software to track details). If a few change requests go unnoticed, your entire team could end up working for free,
Things to check for in your current system or in new systems:
- does the software track job details in one easy to access database?
- can change orders be tracked from initial RFI to invoicing?
- are there forms available in the software that enable a “turn key” production of submittals, RFIs, and so on?
Service Management
If you’re looking for a way to improve your level of service, build a better reputation for your company, and produce a significant ROI, then you may want to look at the service management module within your construction software. For contractors that perform service work, these modules can be used to automate billings, improve customer service, and provide support to your in-the-field technicians.
Things to check for in your current system or in new systems:
- does the software handle dispatching in a manner that helps improve the efficiency of technician use?
- Can the construction software handle things like GPS tracking of trucks or mobile communications with technicians to allow real-time date transfers/exchanges?
Reporting
In the end, the software that you use needs to be capable of delivering reports that contain the information you need to make critical business decisions. To maintain the profit margins that you expect to make, you need to be able to quickly catch problems like cost overages and be able to use real-time information to make the decision about what to do next.
Things to check for in your current system or in new systems:
- a comprehensive list of standard reports
- the ability to create custom reports to meet specific requirements
- “Dashboard reporting” capabilities - the ability to create “high level” reports for owners or upper management that provide at-a-glance performance information but also give the ability to drill down to the details.
Integration
The ability to integrate your core technologies and have them communicate with each other can drastically reduce the amount of time you have to spend ensuring ample communication is taking place between departments, which can help increase margins. Integrating your accounting, operations, and service modules makes this possible.
Thing to check for in your current system or in new systems:
- is enterprise-wide collaboration possible? Can accounting, operations, and services all view the same “financial page” and see how their activities impact the overall company?
- is reporting flexible for each department?
- does data have to be input multiple times by each department, or does it all reside in one single database that only requires one entry?
Determining if Software is Profit-Producer or an Expense
Only by taking the time to evaluate the efficiency in which your construction software streamlines work flow, automates processes, and provides you with the information that you need to make informed decisions, in real time, can you determine if your software is really worth what you’re paying. If you found yourself questioning whether or not your software can meet some of the aforementioned capabilities, it may be time to consult some construction software reviews and find a new system that will contribute positively to your bottom line.

Top 10 Ways to Fail Miserably at Network Marketing
August 31, 2009
Network Marketing (also known as Multi-level Marketing or MLM) or looking for a opportunity to get involved in it then this article can serve as your guide to the pitfalls that will inevitably doom you to failure. Pitfalls like:
?
1. Plan on getting rich quick. ?
Tommy Newberry once said that anything you do towards a goal that’s designed to be achieved within a week is a mistake and that anything you do planning 20 years ahead isn’t. Network Marketing was never designed to be dabbled in and if you’re telling yourself – or you’re being told by someone else – that it’s an easy way to never have to work again you’re buying into a bill of goods that will leave you disheartened and disillusioned because then you….
2. Don’t treat it like a business. ?
The most vocal complaints that I hear about Network Marketing is from the people that not only didn’t succeed at it but never even really tried. Network Marketing is incredibly powerful and has some real heavy hitters advocating it as an amazing business model, but if you’re approaching it like it ISN’T a business – and ignoring the development of all of the skills, talents, abilities and knowledge that running a successful business demands AND the amount of time and energy that will need to go into it - failure is not only a likely outcome – it’s a sure bet.
3. Do it for the money. ??
If the biggest selling point for the multi-level marketing business you’re in – or thinking about joining – is the pay structure, then you’re probably not going to have the staying power you need to make it successful. I assert that people are pretty typically already making the amount of money they’re committed to and if it was really about money for you – you’d already have it. And if you’re only doing it for the money, how is that really an improvement over the job you already have?
4. Work with a Network Marketing company you’re not a raving fan of. ??
Part of the beauty of Multi-Level Marketing is that your upline has a vested interest in your success. If you’re not a raving fan of the company it’s going to get in the way of asking for the support and coaching you need from them to have it turn out.
We also live in a world where people are constantly trying to sell us something and most people’s radar is turned up pretty high for listening for a sales pitch. If you’re not naturally and authentically impressed by the company you’re associated with most people have well enough honed instincts to pick up on it.
And the same goes for….
5. Market products you’re not a raving fan of. ? ?
If you don’t have bragging rights to the benefits of using the very same products you’re selling then you’re doomed to a mediocre career in MLM and you will…
6. Be hypocritical. ??
If the products haven’t done for you what you say they can do at best it’s hypocritical to try and persuade people that it will work for them and at worst it’s out and out lying.
7. Talk about the business, not the solutions or benefits it provides the people you’re talking to.
As the saying goes, if you want to sell seats on the Concord don’t try to sell seats on the Concord, sell people on Paris. People aren’t interested in buying seats on the Concord and you’ll bore them if you try to. What’s important to them and how can your product or business provide it for them?
8. Don’t create value for people. ?
One of the things I love about the Network Marketing company I’m involved with is that when I meet with people I know that I’m going to walk away from the conversation a winner, and so are they – whether I make a dime as a result or not! I am truly there so that these people are served, and with a background as an educator education is one of the ways that I can use that conversation to serve them.
Win/win is a prerequisite for me or I just don’t want to even play.
If the process isn’t fun for you, you won’t ever be able to enjoy the result nearly as much as you think you will.
9. Be deceptive. ?
Have you ever had a friend invite you over for dinner and then surprise you with a ‘presentation’? How do you think you would feel if they did? Unfortunately it’s not an uncommon tactic for a few overzealous network marketers.
I can only imagine that it would only be used if you were still back at number 1 – planning on getting rich quick – and completely available to making your friends and family road kill on the way. I don’t know about you, but that’s not included in my definition of success.
10. Hound people. ?
Making sure that everyone in your Rolodex is afraid to answer the phone when they see your name on the caller ID is not paving the way to your success. And even if it was, who would be left to enjoy it with?
